The Elim Oasis 8: Youth Power: How You're Already Pumping Life Into Kenya's Economy

02 Sep 2026 3 min read

Hello again, my dearest, let's start with a number: seventy-five percent. That's roughly how much of Kenya's population is under 35, which means that whether the headlines are talking about "the youth" or "the economy," they're mostly talking about the same people. You. So today's letter isn't about waiting for opportunities to open up somewhere out there, it's about noticing the economic engine you're already running, one boda ride, one client invoice, one chama

The Elim Oasis 8: Youth Power: How You're Already Pumping Life Into Kenya's Economy

Part 1: You Are Not the Future of the Economy,

You're the Present. It's easy to hear "youth are the future" and file it away as a nice sentiment for a graduation speech. But look at where the money is actually moving:

From jua kali workshops to content creation to boda boda logistics, the informal and gig economy is powered overwhelmingly by people under 35.

Mobile money runs through young hands. Every transfer, till payment, and Caritas Pay tap is a small pulse keeping the economy's blood flowing, and youth are its busiest pulse.

Chamas are quietly one of Kenya's biggest investment vehicles. A huge share of them are youth-led, pooling small, regular contributions into real capital for land, business, and school fees.. Utensils...

None of this is small. It's just scattered. And scattered money, however much of it there is, doesn't build anything on its own (its like 5 people owing you 1,500..Seperate, it is not a lot, together, that is rent for a month.. Different topic!) Anyway, it needs a structure to turn daily hustle into lasting wealth. That's where we come in.

Part 2: Turning Hustle Into Structure

Every shilling you organise instead of just spend is a shilling that can be lent back out to someone else building their own something, a business, a home, utensils, a harvest. That's the actual mechanics of "pumping money into the economy": not just spending, but saving in a way that gets recirculated.

If you're salaried and want your pay organised the moment it lands, a Caritas Salary Account paired with Mobile Banking or Caritas Pay means every allocation, needs, wants, savings, happens on purpose, and your money starts working before the month even gets going.

Running a savings circle with friends or colleagues? A Caritas Chama Account gives your group's contributions a proper home, with the structure and accountability that turns "we're saving together" into "we actually built something."

Got a side hustle you're ready to grow into a real business? A Baraka Business Account is built for entrepreneurs exactly like you, small enough to have started at your kitchen table, ambitious enough to need proper banking, I believe in you!

Need a boda, machinery, or equipment to actually do the work that pays? Asset Finance lets the asset earn its own keep while you pay it off, so the tool that builds your income doesn't drain your savings first.

And if your hustle grows things instead of selling them, our Kilimo Account and Imarisha Kilimo Loan are built around planting and harvest seasons, because young agripreneurs are still farmers.

Protect all of that hustle, too: an unexpected hospital bill, a fire, an encounter with Heha Movers or accident shouldn't be able to undo months of progress. Our Bancassurance partnerships and CARIMED health cover exist so a bad week stays a bad week, not a bad year.

Part 3: Learning the Game Before You're Forced to Play It

Here's the part I am telling  you early enough: earning money and managing money are two completely different skills, and school rarely teaches the second one. That's exactly the gap our Financial Literacy Program exists to close, plain-language sessions on budgeting, saving, borrowing, and investing, taken straight to parishes, chamas, and youth groups, so that by the time you're holding a payslip or a business's first profit, you already know what to do with it.

Because a generation that understands money spends better, saves, lends, borrows, and reinvests better, and that's the difference between hustle that burns out and hustle that compounds.

Part 4: Watch This Space

We're not stopping at accounts and loans borrowed from the general banking playbook. There are youth-first products in the works, built specifically around how you actually, build and  earn (irregular, multiple streams, fast-moving) rather than how a payslip from 1995 assumed you would. The goal is simple: make it just as easy to save your first thousand shillings as it is to spend it, so that showing up, contributing, and building becomes the default, not the exception. More on this soon, I promise.

The Financial Fairy's Golden Rule

You don't need to wait for a title, a corner office, or "the right time"(there never really is) to matter to Kenya's economy. Every deposit you make, every loan you repay on time( please don’t affect your credit), every chama contribution you don't skip, is already doing the work. Our job is just to make sure that work has somewhere solid to grow.

If you're ready to put any of this into action, pop into any branch, call us on 020 5151500, or explore everything under Personal Banking and Channels on our website. We're rooting for your wallet as much as you are.

We will be fine.

May your pockets stay full and your hustle keep compounding,

Todaloo,

Your Financial Fairy
